Are You in Your Own Way?

Are you waiting for the “right time?”

What does that even mean? What is the right time for you? When you have more money? When work gets less busy? When you’re more confident?

The truth is, you’re waiting because you fear failure more than having success.

“For some people, their fear to lose is greater than their desire to succeed, so they end up doing nothing, and their dreams become impossible.”

Rodolfo Costa

Going even further, in psychology, this is also called Catastrophizing and Polarization (all-or-nothing thinking), which can be a form of self-sabotaging. Self-sabotage is an action that gets in the way of achieving our own goals.

You think about the worst thing that can happen.

“what if I don’t lose the weight as fast as I want and I become so disappointed in myself? I’m a failure.”

“what if I do lose the weight and end up gaining it all back because I’m a failure and I know I won’t be able to keep up…”

Then you think all-or nothing:

“I have to have more money and time for me to finally have a good program that’ll help me achieve my goals.

“I have to be in better shape to hire a personal trainer and nutrition coach.”

“I have to do 100% amazing in this program or else I won’t succeed.”

These are also known as Cognitive Distortions.

When you’re aware that your way of thinking is getting in the way of achieving your goals, you come to this realization (and maybe frustration) that you no longer want to WAIT or waste any more time justifying why now is not the right time. You realize that YOU were always in your way.

The only obstacle in your way is YOU AND YOUR OVERTHINKING.

Okay, now that you learned there really is no obstacle in your way except your thinking, another reason why waiting for the right time is problematic is because there will ALWAYS be something in the way. I know, I just said there’s no obstacle in your way but there will always be something in the way. How so?

The thing is, there won’t be a time when everything is smooth and it’s the perfect time to finally do what you want to do. Something WILL come up. Are you going to end your program or journey and just give up because of that one thing that came up? Or are you going to figure out a way to continue while taking care of the new obstacles in your life?

It’s like the Exercise Routine I discussed a few weeks ago that you can do even when life happens. If you missed it, read more here.

That’s why gaining habits will always win over restriction and perfection because it’s more realistic ✅ , doable✅ , sustainable✅ , and applicable to real life✅. Imagine pursuing your goals while dealing with a new job transition or while dealing with your child’s new problems or while having family drama. You would get so much closer to your goals than if you were to press pause and come back to it later wHeN tHe TiMe Is RiGhT.

At least you have your journey to fall back on when life gets hectic. That’s YOUR time. That’s boundaries. When you have this healthy relationship with your life, you’re better able to deal with these new rocks being thrown at you.
