Do You Need More Caffeine or Sleep?

Do you really need another supplement?

Here’s a wake-up call:

When it comes to changing your eating behaviors, sleep should be on the priority list along with eating more whole foods and changing your surroundings.

But how?

According to a recent study from Michigan State University, caffeine may not be the productivity booster many people believe it to be. If you’re feeling sleep deprived or just tired, another supplement is not what you need including caffeine.

Caffeine may make you more alert and focused, but it won’t help you with thinking more clearly.

Specifically, lack of sleep had a negative effect on cognitive functions associated with problem-solving, multi-tasking, and impulse inhibition.

And “for a large number of participants,” drinking caffeine didn’t make up for the lack of cognition.

However, caffeine still offers many benefits. But regardless if you have caffeine or not, your work is likely to still be sloppier after a poor night’s sleep, according to the researchers.

Not only does a lack of sleep lead to poor thinking, but it can also make you unpleasant to be around in social relationships, more frustrated on a daily basis, and unable to regulate your feelings and emotions — all of which do indeed contribute to your eating behaviors.

While some people don’t need as much sleep as others, what you’ve probably been told is a good guideline: The vast majority of adults need at least seven to nine hours zZzZz’s.
