Motivation can get you started and we all need it every now and then. But for long-lasting and almost effortless results, a solid foundation of habits will get you even further. By taking small steps yet being consistent with them, you are slowly building that foundation of habits that you’ll thank for helping you reach your goals without relying on motivation all the time.

When you are waiting for that spark of motivation to make a move, you are wasting time and causing unnecessary stress for yourself because you can’t get the thing done. When you finally get that spark, it feels great, and wish that feeling can stay there and last forever. But you know from experience, it is going to go away again and you are back to waiting for that spark when you can be working on your habits instead so you don’t have to wait again.

How to Build a Solid Foundation of Habits

It is also important to enjoy the process. Enjoying the process makes it easier to make it a habit. You won’t feel like the steps you have to take to reach your goal are chores or tasks you think you have to do to accomplish something. If you are not looking forward to doing it, then there is no drive to take action. Why would you take action on something you don’t like or have fun with anyways? Having a process that you genuinely enjoy and aligns with your interests and values is the underlying key to staying consistent.

Eventually, you come up with strategies that assist you in staying consistent while building that solid foundation of habits. If we lived on our own and didn’t have to deal with others or life obstacles, we probably wouldn’t need to invest in strategies to get us through. However, that is not the case for most of us and we have to be prepared to make sure our process stays intact. For example, if I am not feeling like doing my workout, having a workout planned already helps a lot and so, I will start slowly, turn good music on, and remind myself I will feel better and happier after my workout gets done. These are strategies I have implemented that I know always work even on those days I just want to take it easy and not move.

Making it a Priority

Once these steps are established, you learn what you value and what you want to prioritize. When you begin to focus on your priorities, it feels really good because you are setting boundaries. It is important to take care of your priorities first and then let everything else come in because you are fulfilled and when you are fulfilled, you feel good and ready to face what life throws at you.
